CONTROLLING DOWNLOADS
HELP I DOWNLOADED A PROGRAM AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT WENT!!
Sound familiar? We've all done it.
HERE ARE SOME STEPS TO CONTROL YOUR DOWNLOADS:
PART 1:
1. Go to: My computer, then click the C drive to open it.
2. Once in the C drive:
3. Go to: (on menu bar at top) file / new / folder.
HINT: this folder will appear at the very bottom of your C drive so if you have a lot of files
on that drive you will have to use the scroll bar on the right side of the screen to go all the way to the bottom.
4. Name your new folder downloads.
5. For easier
management of your folders on your C drive (or any other drive) go
to:
(on menu bar at top) view
/ arrange icons by / name.
PART 2:
1. When downloading something from an internet webpage - do not just click on it.
2. Right click on the download link.
3. A pop up menu will appear.
Netscape users: choose save as...
Internet Explorer users: choose save target as....
4. After choosing either of these options a download starting box will appear.
5. Immediately after this box appears your computer dialog box will appear.
HINT: This is the box that has all of your computer files / folders in it.
6. Find the folder you made on your C drive that says: download.
7. Now click on save to save your download here.
BEFORE OPENING AND INSTALLING ANY DOWNLOADS TO YOUR COMPUTER YOU SHOULD ALWAYS USE YOUR VIRUS PROTECTION SOFTWARE TO SCAN THE DOWNLOAD FOLDER TO ENSURE YOU HAVE NOT DOWNLOADED A VIRUS INTO YOUR COMPUTER.
Usually your virus scanning software will have a right click option on it so you can just go back to your download folder on your C drive and right click on it and choose your virus software and scan the folder before opening the download.
If your virus software does not have a right click option you will have to execute the software from the: start/programs/virus software section and then choose the download folder on your C drive and scan it that way.
PART 3: WINZIP DOWNLOADS:
You must go into your winzip program and look under configuration. Here you will be able to use the browse button and designate where you want your downloads to go.
HINT: The downloads folder on your C drive would be a good place to put them.
PART 4: DOWNLOAD MANAGERS (sometimes called accelerators).
Download managers / accelerators are like the winzip program. They will have somewhere to configure it within the program itself.
HINT: The downloads folder on your C drive would be a good place to put them.
Now you should be able to control your downloads and also protect yourself a little better from internet virus attacks.
