UNINSTALL USING DELTREE.EXE
Please read this page completely before deciding to use this method of uninstall.
This file (deltree.exe) can be found on any computer by following this path: C:\windows\command\deltree.exe(not a valid link) [if you do not find this file on your computer it was probably removed for parental control reasons. I have no control over that].
Download it here: Deltree.zip
Copy this file to a 3.5 floppy disk.
This program should always be run from a floppy because if you run the program from the above command line, once windows is removed so is your program.
This is a method to remove only the components of the "C" drive that you choose. Sometimes a time consuming process, but it enables you to keep some of your files that are not integrated into other programs.
For example:
You may have your cd rom containing Office 2000 copied onto your hard drive for easier access when it decides to update itself, or if you need to add a component from it.
You may also have your win98 folder from your cd rom copied to your hard drive. Keeping this folder will make it easier to reload win98 back onto your computer.
Using this method of uninstall will enable you to keep some of these directories (folders) without reinstalling.
HOW TO UNINSTALL USING THE DOS COMMAND DELTREE.EXE:
REMEMBER TO GET ALL YOUR DRIVERS/SETUP FILES PRIOR TO CONTINUING.
Before you start, open up
your "C" drive and write down
(on a piece of paper) the names of any
folders you are planning on keeping.
Remember a folder in DOS will be called a "directory".
1. Restart computer in MS-DOS mode.
2. MS-DOS mode will start you with this: c:\windows>
3. To get to a normal c prompt, type: cd:\.
4. Then hit enter.
NOW YOU ARE READY TO BEGIN. (Remember after each command to hit enter).
At the C:\ type A:\ then hit enter. This will change your directory to the 3.5 floppy drive.
1. At the A:\ Type: deltree.exe c:\.
2. You will now be asked to start removing each and every file and directory from your hard drive. (this is why it can be very time consuming and tedious).
3. For each file or directory (folder) you will be asked if you are sure you want to delete this from your hard drive. The option you will be given is to hit one of the following keys: Y/N.
4. Remember after each entry you must hit the enter key on the keyboard.
![]()
5. DON'T BE TOO QUICK TO HIT Y/ENTER. THIS DELETE IS PERMANENT AND CANNOT BE REVERSED!!
6. Delete ALL files/directories that are not the ones you previously wrote down to keep. (even if it looks like it might be an important system file). Windows will reinstall what it needs.
7. After you choose N for a file/directory, the next file for deletion will appear.
8. After each file/directory you choose Y for you will see this:
deleting....., when the deletion of that file/directory is complete the next question will automatically come up.
9. Some of your files/directories can be very large (even exceeding 1G) so remember this when it seems to be taking a very long time to delete something. Do not think it is not working right. Just give it time.
10. When windows has come to the end of all your files and directories that you have chosen to delete you will be brought back to an: A:\>.
11. Provided you have left
the win98 folder on your "C" drive (if you had one), from here at the
A:\ you can change the directory once again to the C:\ by typing: C:\ then hit
enter. Now you can install windows once again from your win98 folder you left on
your hard drive. Your command path will look like this:
C:\win98\setup.exe. (Remember to hit enter after
each command path you type).
12. Windows will now proceed to be reinstalled on your computer.
13. Remember you will have to reinstall anything that was in your program files, and all of your hardware's drivers so be sure to have these ready before you start.
